Educated at Riley Technical High School in Hull, he left school aged 16 \u2014 with three O&#8217; Levels and a CSE (!) \u2014 to begin an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator. In 1982 (with a mortgage and two children) he was made redundant, and consequently made the decision to become a sole-trader, setting up his own painting &amp; decorating business.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 2000, he began studying for a degree with the Open University (He was awarded a 2:1 BSc (Honours) Information Technology and Computing in 2009). It was around this time (late 1999\/early 2000) that he also became an active member of <a href=\"http:\/\/philiplarkin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Philip Larkin Society<\/a>, which led to a long-term research interest in musical settings of Philip Larkin&#8217;s poetry. Prominent Larkin scholar Dr John Osborne, in his monograph\u00a0<em>Larkin, Ideology and Critical Violence: A Case of Wrongful Conviction<\/em>\u00a0(Palgrave Macmillan, 2008) refers to him as &#8216;the the world authority on musical settings of Philip Larkin&#8217;s poetry&#8217;.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>In 2010, as part of the activities organised to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Philip Larkin&#8217;s death, he curated (and was executive producer of)\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/allnightnorth.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">all night north<\/a><\/em>, a CD of new songs by young bands and songwriters from Hull using poems by Philip Larkin as lyrics.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He has published two short collections of poetry:\u00a0<em>Hold Something Warm<\/em>\u00a0(1996) and\u00a0<em>Lost Thoughts and Radio Waves<\/em>\u00a0(1999), and has had several articles (and a number of his poems) published in\u00a0<em>About Larkin<\/em>, the biannual journal of The Philip Larkin Society. He has presented papers relating to his specialist subject at a number of academic conferences and Study Days. As a poet, he has had work published in several small magazines and anthologies, including\u00a0<em>The Rialto<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Magma<\/em>,\u00a0<em>The Hull Connection<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>10 Miles East of England<\/em>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>He set up a small publishing imprint\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dancingsisters.co.uk\/\">Dancing Sisters<\/a>\u00a0in 2016, and has published small pamphlet collections by several poets, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.legalhighspress.com\/shop\/p\/living-by-the-law-of-light-mary-mccollum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Mary McCollum<\/a>, Frank Newsum and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PoetDeanwilson6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dean Wilson<\/a>. In 2017 he published\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Hull-2017-Facts-People-Associated\/dp\/0993233082\/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&amp;qid=1483630861&amp;sr=8-1\">Hull 2017: 2017 facts about Hull and people associated with the city<\/a><\/em>; and on 9 August 2022, the centenary of the birth of Philip Larkin, he published his research on musical settings of Larkin&#8217;s poetry <em>Astonishing the Brickwork: Philip Larkin set to music<\/em>. The book was published by <a href=\"https:\/\/dancingsisters.co.uk\/\">Dancing Sisters<\/a> in association with <a href=\"http:\/\/philiplarkin.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Philip Larkin Society<\/a>, and is available from the dedicated <a href=\"http:\/\/larkintomusic.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">larkintomusic.com<\/a> website.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JAMES ORWIN\u00a0was born in Scotland.
